The Grainfather

If you’ve not come across it before, The Grainfather is the brainchild of New Zealand based iMake: an all-in-one brewing system developed over the course of two years and launched in the UK earlier this year. The Grainfather mashes, sparges, boils and chills your brew, saving you time and energy - less mess means less cleaning and that's something we can definitely get on board with.

This is one sleek piece of kit: comprised of the main boiler unit with temperature control and built in pump, a removable grain basket and counter-flow wort chiller. All you really need in addition to this is a beer paddle or long handled spoon, fermenting bin and hydrometer. A hot water urn for heating sparge water is useful, but not essential.

The easiest way to describe it is 'easy'. The Grainfather is very beginner friendly, and although the instructions are a little vague, there is great online support and plenty of video tutorials to guide you through your pilot brew and any problems you may encounter. Once familiar with the kit, you can be running through brews in under 4 hours easily. When filled with cold water, The Grainfather took around 20 minutes to come up to our mashing temperature of 67°C and despite a couple of fluctuations after adding the grain, maintained this temperature throughout the mash. It has a pump which recirculates the wort from bottom to top, meaning that once you've got your grain in you can put your feet up for an hour. Time for tea?
  
After sparging, boiling and cleaning out the grain basket in between, it's on to what is one of The Grainfather's main attractions -  the counter flow wort chiller. Super quick to and easy to use, saving the usual faff of ice baths or trying to fashion immersion chillers. This is done and dusted in about 20 minutes, and the result is a glorious crystal clear liquid. And this is where we bid our Grainfather farewell, after a good scrub of course.

Working with our friends at The Brewstore in Edinburgh, we have formed a band of avid homebrewers at our HQ in Edinburgh who will be leading the charge on our latest project - YouBrew. We want to encourage our drinkers to experiment with brewing themselves and once perfected we shall release our clone recipe of Original for keen fans to try and replicate at home.
