SPEED BLOGGING AT THE BEER BLOGGERS CONFERENCE
By Rachel Sutherland
It was another glorious evening in Edinburgh on Saturday. I could have been enjoying a cheeky half of Innis & Gunn Lager with my dinner. Instead I was invited, along with our Brand Ambassador, Richard, to take part in a bit of live beer blogging. I wasn’t sure this was going to be quite so relaxing…
The event was organised as part of the European Beer Bloggers Conference. Live beer blogging, or speed blogging, kind of takes the same format as speed dating. There were around seventy bloggers at tables and nine brewers had been invited along to take part. They included WEST, Inveralmond, Shepard Neame, Traquair House, Ilkley Brewery, Badger Ales, Birra Toccalmalto, Harviestoun and us.
We were really pleased to be invited and as there were so many good brewers involved, I wanted to make sure we took along something a little bit special. Earlier in the week, we had finished bottling our latest Limited Edition, Innis & Gunn Oloroso Cask. It was so fresh from the brewery, that not even everyone on the I&G team had had the chance to taste it.
The beer had been matured in 240 Oloroso Sherry casks from Spain, which were extremely tricky for us to track down. We brewed the beer with I&G ale and amber malt and malted wheat, with fuggles hops, that we thought would complement the rich, figgy flavours that would come from the casks. Watch this space for more information on the beer itself and when you'll be able to get your hands on some.
Before we knew it, live blogging had begun. We each had five minutes to introduce ourselves to our table, give them a sample of our beer and then explain a little about our company, describe the aroma and flavours in the beer and then detail the ingredients and how it was made. Then a bell was rung and we had to rotate to the next table.
Thankfully Richard was there to get the beer and make sure I didn’t get lost trying to find the next table. The whole time I’m trying to remember everything I have to say in five minutes (not as long as you think), the bloggers are taking photos of the beer, tweeting, updating their blogs and asking me extra questions. Everyone was great, and there were lots of questions and feedback. At the end of 45 minutes I could have started again.
Scary, but so much fun. You can check out all the action on twitter #ebbc13 and keep your eyes peeled for Innis & Gunn Oloroso Cask in September. It’s as rare as hen’s teeth!
