Manuel and I trot down the road to the metro station where we take a short ride into the the city. We ascend the longest escalator stairs I have ever seen, something out of the bowels of the post socialist subway, and into the warmth of Prague’s autumn evening.
As we arrive on the surface we step straight into the city’s street fair, part of Prague’s local wine culture. Come to think about it, I remember seeing vineyards on the hillside around the castle earlier today.
On top of the local bottles of vino on display, there were some stands that were offering a local brew made from grapes. It was crudely fermented, with a sugary taste and smells slightly like puke… Regardless of the smell though, I enjoyed the local brew, although it was essentially just Czech-grape moonshine.
As darkness falls on the city, we see a band turn up and hit the stage. Whilst the band was playing, me, Manuel and his work mates all clustered on a rug and exchanged random travel stories. There were nine of us in total, four Americans, two Scots, an Irishman, Manuel (Venezuelan) and me (the Aussie). I shared the Innis & Gunn slab I had picked up back in suburbs and they were extremely well received, especially by the off duty duty teachers. Nobody seems to mind taking a break from the semi-fermented vino to have a can of IPA, especially the Scots in our group who loved the fact I bought a slab of Edinburgh beers to a Czech wine festival.
The heavens opened and at about 9:00 we relocated to a bar, getting thoroughly soaked en route. The bar is a cavern of a place, set up in a stone walled basement. There’s a friendly house dog, a bunch of middle aged Czech punks and a juke box full of eighties dance hits. The beers flow freely, with the house tap brew costing only 20 crowns a pint! That’s the equivalent of £0.84.
Prague is a fun place. Two nights here is nowhere near enough, but I hope I can come back soon.
