VOTE FOR CANADA'S NEXT GREAT BEER FLAVOUR
By Claire McPherson
The good people of Britain created this raw egg cocktail back in goodness knows when. The drink's exact beginnings are hotly contested, however it's widely agreed to have begun its life as posset* in the 13th century or there abouts... probably. Traditionally a drink of the aristocracy as its ingredients were rather expensive ones, and only the rich could afford to squander eggs and milk on such frivolous imbibing. Typically eggnog consists of milk, eggs and sugar and is then laced with something a little more potent. We've used cream as well because we wanted this festive treat to be as rich and indulgent as possible. Ideal after dinner, or if you can't wait that long, lavish on desserts - beats plain old custard any day.
Despite its invention in the UK, eggnog is now most popular in Canada and the USA, where serves of 'nog go hand in hand with Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. Our friends across the pond tell us their homemade versions are made in bulk at Thanksgiving, dished out as gifts to friends & family but aren't ready for drinking until Christmas. However you like yours, here's how we like ours. As always, get experimenting with your favourite beers and let us know if you come across a winner.
You will need:
700ml whole milk
500ml double cream
1 vanilla pod
3 bottles Original
Whisk eggs with half of the sugar until sugar dissolves.
Slowly add cream & milk & remaining sugar.
Add beer & spirit.
Serve chilled and garnish with a sprinkling of nutmeg.
TopTip: We substituted Original for our Scotch Whisky Porter and replaced the Bourbon with 150ml Oloroso Sherry. It was so delicious, Dougal even declared it 'a triumph'.
Keep refrigerated in an air tight container. This drink is at its best after a week or so.
* Posset: A drink made of hot milk curdled with ale, wine, or other alcohol and typically flavoured with spices
