VOTE FOR CANADA'S NEXT GREAT BEER FLAVOUR
ALEX JAMES, CHEESE & BEER
By Rupert Ponsonby
The second year for Jamie Oliver’s Feastival saw 12,000 a day descending on Blur’boy Alex James’s farm in the northern bits of Oxfordshire. Multicoloured foodies and music freaks poured like molten metal from London and the far north bearing tents, rucksacks and beanie hats. The curtains of the neighbouring Old People’s Home quivered at the sight of such an eclectic hors d’oeuvre of colour shimmering past, with outfits strangely reminiscent of the 1960’s. Cows and sheep ran for their lives. Chickens stayed firmly in their hutch.
Our Mr Trotter’s Great British Pork Crackling stand, a mere one metre wide, was besieged by hungry honchos, devouring over 1000 packs of our Original and red hot Jalapeno seasoned porkies. The Jamie’s mag stand, our neighbours, sold out of subscriptions, such was the demand for a slice of their cheeky chappy hero; and chefs galore strutted their stuff and made dieting a distant dream.
Then over to Alex James’s Cheese Hub for a 40 minute double act with me and the Blur-Band-Boy himself, 120 of us in a red hot tent, chomping his four cheeses with the likes of Innis & Gunn, Liefmans Cherry beer, Moretti, Wychwood Gingerbeard and Meantime’s IPA. It were mad. Then KT Tunstall fired up her Celtic vocals - wottagirl she is; and me and the Old People’s Home made our shapes (slightly zimmery, maybe) and raved the night away. Who needs Radio 2 anyway?
