A CURIOUS EVENING OF BEER & CHOCOLATE WITH EDWARD & IRWYN
By Leila Kean – Events Manager, Innis & Gunn
It’s not often you get to meet real wizards; wizards of confectionary that is. Edward & Irwyn are indeed that, and we first met them back in the summer of 2012 when we were running our now near-legendary summer pop-up bar at Potterrow. The first surprise is that Edward & Irwyn are actually two ladies; Edda & Kirsty to be more precise.
Edda trained with some of France’s finest chocolatiers, and decided to set up her own business here in Edinburgh with the help of her apprentice and business partner, Kirsty. They have spent the past couple of years building up their business, weaving a cocoa-scented magic spell around their kitchen up in Morningside.
Forget your strawberry crèmes and boring brazils. These two make wonderful things happen with layers of flavour. Aromatic one minute, perhaps a peppery note the next. The last time we worked together we quickly discovered that Innis & Gunn’s beers go extremely well with good chocolate, and especially if those chocolates are created with the finest ingredients to go with the various wood-matured and spirit-finished beers that we produce.
When I was putting together the programme of our ‘Innis & Gunn Introduces…’ ticketed events here at our newly launched HQ events space, Edward & Irwyn were a shoe-in for our first scheduled date in February. Tickets sold out within a matter of days days and on 4th February , two dozen flavour-fanatics came along to enjoy an evening of beer & chocolate pairings.
Our very own Rachel Sutherland welcomed guests and led the group through the story of how Innis & Gunn was discovered by accident back in 2002. Edda & Kirsty then took to the floor to tell us about how they came to work together and a little bit about how they source and blend various different single-origin chocolate couvertures, and special natural flavours.
We then eagerly worked our way through five different beer & chocolate pairings, mulling over the flavours. Enthusiastically declaring ‘THAT’s my favourite’ at each pairing, before the next one came along and blew the last one out the water with yet more creative brilliance. Are you picking up on the fact that you missed a really good night yet?
If you’ve never tried Edward & Irwyn’s chocolates before, I’d urge you to do so as soon as possible – they truly are quite special. Their malted honeycomb will make your tastebuds happy, the scots pine and juniper with smoked salt is nothing short of genius, and if you ‘re lucky enough to try a salted caramel with jasmine scented white chocolate you’ve been party to something very delicious indeed. That last one was certainly my favourite, paired with what were very nearly our last remaining bottles of last year’s Limited Edition Oloroso Cask beer. Sob.
We’re off to a flying start with our events here at HQ (our event with Crombie’s butcher on 4th March is now sold out) and so we hope to welcome you to a tasty evening of fantastic food & beer parings soon!
‘Innis & Gunn Introduces…’ events run the first Tuesday of every month.
