Wet Shoes, Cute Donkeys
By Emmanuel Marshall | Rawsafari.com
I continue my journey this time catching a ride with an elegantly dressed Czech dude named Petr, who has enough energy to power a small town, and his canine buddy Rusty. It’s been raining for quite a while now, so I’m super glad I’ve finally been picked up. We drive fast, through the lowering twilight towards Jindrichuv Hradec in the south Bohemian Region.
Petr’s quite the talker and one of those natural born story makers, which is fine with me, as I’m happy to listen, nodding occasionally and making amazed noises. He tells me about his life and his recent revelations about the need for freedom. His parents and his struggles with ill-health. The political crisis, and global warming.
Having listened to his life story in it’s entirety, we arrive in Jindrichuv Hradec where we head to a pub with his friend George. His nervousness to talk is apparent from the get go with the English/Czech language barrier. Nevertheless, I ensured language wouldn’t be a barrier with the help of my phone’s Google translate, where I soon had George in full on conversation. As we head on out of the bar, we sit by a tranquil lake where I get out and share my last two cans of IPA. They were fascinated to hear that the beer was from Scotland and that I had been hitchhiking with them from Edinburgh.
I think I may have inspired Petr to the life of a nomad, mentioning he too would like to travel albeit without hitchhiking completely, “perhaps I will abandon my car and take a donkey instead”. I’m sure Rusty the dog and his new donkey would make good friends. It’s 3am and Petr staggers off to sleep in his car. I on the other hand set up camp in the nearby wooded area, by the lake’s southern shore. The scene is almost unbelievably idyllic, a really picture perfect European forest. From my tent I can see the lights of the town, and the moon reflected on the face of the lake.
At 9.30am, I feel Rusty ducking his head under my tent flap. There’s nothing nicer than being woken up by a loving pup. We cook up a breakfast and head out to the edge of town. Although we’ve only known each other for 24 hours, it was an emotional farewell.
I leave him with some final words of wisdom, “Go find a cute donkey and see the world”.
